TEACHING TOOLS: Using MineCraft Faces in Math

Students in my Grade 3 class have been working on calculating the area of shapes. 

Last week they were given the challenge to find the area of several Minecraft faces. 


Afterwards, students ordered the faces (they were given 4 faces) from smallest area to largest area. 


Students were also challenged to find a clever way to calculate the area of each face.

Students were asked to find clever ways to calculate the area of the Minecraft Faces. I loved how they showed their mathematical thinking! Here are some examples:
